| The event that became an Institution |

|
| It’s been more than a century since a small group of people in Rethymno decided to take advantage of the carnival season. Up until then, only some folklore events were taking place and so in 1914 the first carnival parade in Rethymno occurred. However, after a few years due to the historical events of the past century, the carnival stopped until the early 90s when the people of Rethymno decided to organize the procession again and every year since then the participation has exceeded their expectations. |
Due to the covid-19 restrictions, this is the third year in a row that the Sunday parade has been canceled. Every year the carnival season takes place between February and March. The season lasts three weeks with a big variety of events and activities, for children, adults and, all the families!!! These include; parties, musical events, treasure hunts, dances, and also barbeques in every street and alleyway, with people dressed in colourful costumes having fun all around the town. |

|
| The end of the carnival season ends with a big Sunday parade, which this year should have been on March 6th. More than 36 teams with at least 25.000 participants colourfully dressed in funny costumes would have participated, dancing to the rhythm of the carnival songs, laughing, and having fun with everyone around them! Also, more than 60.000 people usually come to watch and join in the fun by following the parade and participating in the parties that take place all over the town! … the party goes on until the early "Clean Monday" morning… |

| The "Clean Monday" celebration |
"Clean Monday" marks the beginning of the 40-days of Lent until Easter, the biggest religious celebration of Orthodox religion. Clean Monday is a bank holiday with no stable date of celebration as it varies depending on the date of the Orthodox Easter. One explanation for the reason we call this day "Clean Monday", is that after the consumption of large amounts of meat through carnival season, Clean Monday, signals the start of Lent, a time to cleanse and purify our body and our soul and prepare us for Easter. |
| |
|
| | Another name for Clean Monday is "Koulouma". Koulouma means the massive visitation of people to the countryside to celebrate Clean Monday. The word comes from the Latin word “columus”, meaning excess and aplenty. One of this day's main activities is kite-flying. In the olden days, kites were handmade, but nowadays you can buy them ready-made with a big variety of shapes and colours. Families and friends gather in the countryside, with the sounds of traditional greek folklore music, dancing, eating and attempting to fly a kite... |
| |
|
| For the Christian Orthodox church, the kite symbolizes the human soul, which flies in the sky free and pure to meet our creator. Through this process, the believers are preparing for the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the Orthodox Easter. |
