| In its more than 100 years of life, the Carnival of Rethymno has gone through difficult times, and not only managed to survive, but each time it stands up even more vital. Like a huge tree in the heart of the city, our Carnival has roots that go deep into local history and tradition. From the Renaissance to the “Commedia Dell'Arte”, and from the ancient Roman “Saturnalia” to the rituals of Minoan times. This historical continuity differentiates the Carnival of Rethymno and makes it unique. |
|
The Carnival of the city vividly expresses the aspects of its history, a multidimensional and multicultural history that takes you back to a magical past, distant but so familiar! Rethymno is a city in which the European Renaissance left its imprint, which is why many travellers who have passed through here over the years have always described the unique culture of the people. This timeless quality, which stems from the people of Rethymno themselves, is something we preserve and share generously, in the way we know how, even in the most adverse conditions. |

|
| The visitors, wherever they come from, become a living and active part of the Carnival of Rethymno, they surround it with their joy and presence, but at the same time they fall in love with it and make it their place. We know that our world is changing but our Carnival, we change it on our terms, with art, colour and positive energy. Rethymno Carnival is the place where you express yourself freely, the place where you live your dreams, and the place of all of us. The place where you always return to…!!! |

| The " Tsiknopempti" and the "Clean Monday" celebrations |
Tsiknopempti is the Thursday during the carnival season, which marks the beginning of the last weekend that observant Greek Orthodox Church members are allowed to eat meat before they begin their Lenten fast. The word “tsikna” refers to the smell of cooked meat. On this day everyone, traditionally, prepares and enjoys their favourite meat dishes and typically a cloud of smoke where it is being cooked or barbecued. This gives Tsiknopempti one of its other common names, “Smoked Thursday”. Tsiknopempti is also a popular day for going out to eat and enjoying as many different slices of meat as possible. Be sure to reserve a table ahead of time as restaurants and traditional taverns are typically fully booked! |

| "Clean Monday" marks the beginning of the 40-days of Lent until Easter, the biggest religious celebration of Orthodox religion. Clean Monday is a bank holiday with no stable date of celebration as it varies depending on the date of the Orthodox Easter. One explanation for the reason we call this day "Clean Monday", is that after the consumption of large amounts of meat through carnival season, Clean Monday, signals the start of Lent, a time to cleanse and purify our body and our soul and prepare us for Easter. |
Another name for Clean Monday is "Koulouma". Koulouma means the massive visitation of people to the countryside to celebrate Clean Monday. The word comes from the Latin word “columus”, meaning excess and aplenty. One of this day's main activities is kite-flying. In the olden days, kites were handmade, but nowadays you can buy them ready-made with a big variety of shapes and colours. Families and friends gather in the countryside, with the sounds of traditional greek folklore music, dancing, eating and attempting to fly a kite... |
